Leprosy is a bacterial infection that effects the skin and nerves and mucous membranes. Today it is easily treatable with antibiotics but back then it was not only an incurable disease, it affected millions across Europe. It was also believed by many to be highly contagious and was greatly feared, and so to hear rumour that such herb may exist must have been extremely exciting for her.
